Humans of New York

Online we are overwhelmed with stories about extraordinary people who seem completely alienated from the general public, but one website is trying to change that.

Humans of New York began as one man’s photography project in 2010, as a man named Brian Stanton’s mission to photograph 10,000 residents of New York City to give an accurate demographic of the city’s residents.

The goal of the project was to create an “exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants” and it continues to do just that.  Eventually after photographing his subjects he began to interview them to include quotes or even short stories about their lives.

Today, Humans of New York is a major blog that is followed by over twenty million people on all social media platforms. It has expanded to 20 countries and has even created a series of people in similar situations to tell similar stories in different ways.
