Recently on March 2nd 2026, me and many other Shaker High School students took a field trip to the six elementary schools for Read Across America day. I had a great time on this field trip and had the opportunity to read to kids and immerse them in reading related stations. At the beginning of the day, we were assigned classrooms for the field trip. I was paired up with 5 other students from Ms. Belfance’s ninth grade honors classes. We took a bus over to Boght Hills. Once the classrooms were ready, we were sent to the classes. I was sent to a second grade classroom. We started the field trip off with a read aloud and after that we split up into three stations. The first station was bookmark making where the kids would make bookmarks. The second station was a handprint station where the kids wrote why they loved reading. The third station was acting out the book and showing emotions. We wrapped it up with a short Q&A about high school.
All in all, this was a very enjoyable moment and an amazing opportunity. A big thanks to Mrs. Byrne and Mrs. Weimer who were kind enough to help set this up. It was definitely something that can help teach high schoolers about a potential career in teaching. I was the leader in this situation and overall I felt like it was something I would do again.
