Every student in Shaker High School crowds inside the gymnasium in sections separated by grade. By the time everyone settles down, the pep rally has begun and people wait in anticipation for the upcoming events that are meant to boost our morale and cheer on our athletic teams. Pep rallies in Shaker High School have always been an important part of our culture, it is a tradition that still holds strong and counts as some of the most memorable days of our high school experiences.
In the days upcoming a pep rally, the school holds a spirit week where students are given the freedom to dress according to a chosen theme. This builds up enthusiasm for the big day at the end of the week, where it’s recommended to wear the signature Bison blue and white colors to show support for the athletic teams of that season. The schedule is often shortened and altered in order to make time during the Friday of the rally. As the pep rally begins, athletic teams are called upon and they walk through the gym where people cheer and chant in celebration. The crowd recognizes the teams that bring pride to our school by representing us in competitions throughout the season.
Events that usually take place after the athletes are seated are meant to entertain the school through various activities. This may include performances by cheerleaders, clubs, groups, and musicians who are a part of Shaker’s diverse bands. There are also games that are hosted which involve volunteers who are willing to fight for their grade, usually in challenges, creating friendly competition and the essence of community.
Pep rallies become some of the most memorable and nostalgic parts of our high school experiences due to the distinct nature of them. They form a schoolwide bond from the energy and loud cheers which makes an unforgettable atmosphere of excitement. Students share moments of school pride and excitement, and necessary elements keep pep rallies together. Even though the school is split among the different types of students, clubs, grades, classes, activities, and interests, this singular 40 minute break from the reality of school is enough to remind us that our 4 years are meant to be spent creating happy memories. By celebrating the talent and teamwork of Shaker students, we also celebrate the beauty of being a part of the Shaker community.
