In celebration of Shaker’s 75th birthday, the district’s beloved mascot, the Blue Bison, is finally getting a name! The Bison, being a large part of the Shaker community, has supported and uplifted core school spirit events and more since it and the district’s origin.
Looking back, it’s easy to wonder why the bison represents our school. Historically, the bison has been a symbol of resilience and strength. Nowhere is this more evident than in our eager, determined community and the environment our school fosters. Bison strength is especially representative of our school sports teams. Shaker is a school district of winners and when they are not, they give their all to the end in a show of resilience and perseverance.
Additionally, the bison is a symbol of both renewal and generosity. The district displays this with its many programs made to give back and help its community. All schools in the district are equipped to aid students and families in need, in a way that protects and supports them. On no smaller of a scale the student body is just as committed to giving back. Many student-led clubs and organizations exist at both the middle and high school level, all these clubs leading to advocacy, awareness, and resulting in paying it forward generously to their community. And through all of this, the spirit of the Bison has fueled Shaker and North Colonie endeavors.
Now, after 75 years, the community has come together to finally name the Bison.
Preparations started early this school year, with 1,000 submissions sent in as nominations, the mascot was one step closer to getting their name. The top six names were chosen from the community; students, staff, families, alumni, and more! Those names being Bryson, Benny, Buddy, Ziggy, Blue, Billy.
Starting in late November, the Bison traveled through all the elementary schools to help collect ballots with the students. After, they did similarly at the middle and high school. Will all the votes in, time will only tell what the Bison new, official name will turn out to be!
