The 83rd Annual Golden Globes Awards was an eventful evening for all in attendance. To start, host Nikki Glaser perfectly constructed her monologue with subtle and direct humor, successfully blurring the lines of comedy with the reality of our world. Her hilarious performance ranged from the observation of Leonardo DiCaprio’s obsession with dating women under thirty to criticizing the importance of this award show. She noted that the Golden Globes are “without a doubt the most important thing happening in the world right now” in a sarcastic response to the release of the Epstein Files occurring during these entrancing celebrity performances.
In terms of wins, Teyanna Taylor took the award home for Best Female Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another. Her speech was especially emotional, emphasizing to her audience, “my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability… we belong in every room we walk into.” Despite not preparing a victory speech, thinking she wouldn’t win the award, her words of courage touched the hearts of young people of color all over the world. Owen Cooper, the lead in the hit show Adolescence, became one of the youngest Golden Globe winners, reminiscing on his past experience with acting classes. “I was the only boy there. It was embarrassing, but I got through it.” His perseverance and determination as a young actor stand as a great example for any aspiring actor. Additionally, Kpop Demon Hunters lead Ejae also delivered a passionate acceptance speech about her past experience as a K-pop idol trainee weighing down on her ability as a performer, yet her win proved, as she said, that “It’s never too late to shine like you’re born to be.” Another noteworthy win was Timothée Chalamet in his substantial role in Marty Supreme as a fast-paced table tennis player. His speech consisted of honoring the “greats” by his standards, like Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank. He also sent out a sweet love declaration for his current partner, Kylie Jenner, showing appreciation for her and the support she has provided throughout this movie.
Given that the Golden Globes is a highly watched show annually, a group of celebrities showed their support by protesting the current political administration in countless ways. Judd Apatow, a presenter at the show, bluntly said, “I believe we’re a dictatorship now,” after which the audience laughed awkwardly in response to his observation. Another approach included people like Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Styles, and Jean Smart wearing “ICE OUT” and “BE GOOD” shirts as a symbol of resistance against the injustice of the murders of Renne Goode and Keith Port Jr., both unfortunately shot and killed by Immigration Officers. This year’s show was full of heartfelt wins and acts of defiance that brought a sense of unity in a polarized time.
