On January 3, 2026, the former president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured in Caracas and flown to New York to face drug trafficking and weapons charges in a surprise U.S military operation.
What Happened?
The U.S operation, code-named Operation Absolute Resolve, began at around 2 am. U.S forces carried out a raid in Venezuela, allegedly using military units and intelligence support. According to Venezuelan officials, U.S troops bombed multiple locations in Caracas and then took Maduro and his wife from their home. They later appeared in court after being flown out of the country.
Maduro and his spouse appeared before a federal judge on January 5. They entered a not guilty plea to charges of weapons and drug trafficking. They claimed to have been “kidnapped.” Maduro maintained that the United States had no right to detain him on Venezuelan territory and that he is still the country’s constitutional president.
Why did the United States do this?
The U.S explained that they went through with the operation because of long-standing federal criminal charges against Maduro and Flores. The U.S accused them of terrorism, drug trafficking, and the use of weapons to help criminal networks in Venezuela. They justified their operation by saying that it is an effort to bring Maduro to justice.
Venezuela’s and the World’s Response
Venezuela believes that the capture of Maduro was illegal and a violation of national sovereignty. The government declared that Maduro was still president and that Vice President Delcy Rodriguez was acting leader. There were protests that broke out in areas, and the state’s media accused the U.S of aggression.
There were many mixed reactions around the world. Some countries openly supported the U.S while some felt that the operation could weaken international law. The United Nations expressed concern about the long-term effects of the use of military force.
Moving Forward
One of the most dramatic moments in recent Latin American history was the capture of Nicolás Maduro. It has brought up significant issues regarding international law and sovereignty.
The political future of Venezuela is uncertain. Acting President Rodriguez now leads the government, but there are still internal and international pressures that remain. For the U.S, they will now focus on the aftermath, including legal proceedings on Maduro.
