The American Government shutdown on October 1, 2025, resulted from the Democratic and Republican congressional inability to come to an agreement on a bill that funded government services for the new fiscal year. The established plan between Congress is critical, because it provides the President a spending contract to sign and follow for a given time period. Republicans control both chambers of Congress, but their numbers in the Senate are not sufficient to completely dominate, giving Democrats the opportunity to voice their different concerns.
Both Democrats and Republicans alike had a large number of requests that were difficult to negotiate. Democrats wanted to expand expiring tax credits as part of the Affordable Care Act to create cheaper health insurance for citizens across America. They also sought to reverse health insurance cuts, including President Trump’s cuts on Medicaid, a program aimed at assisting disabled, elderly, and lower-income individuals. On the other hand, Republicans argued that an extension would increase federal spending and deepen the deficit. The uneasiness from the failed negotiations between both sides caused a back-and-forth battle about who is responsible for this situation.
With the government shutdown, some aspects will continue to function as usual. Congress members, ICE agents, and hospital workers will continue their work. However, many flights have been cancelled or delayed, and many government workers have been put on unpaid leave. Other services funded by the government, including national parks and museums, have been closed temporarily or shut down.
The future remains uncertain, even after the shutdown is resolved. On September 30, Trump’s administration stated that there was a possibility of not providing laid-off workers their unpaid salaries, because some workers “don’t deserve to be taken care of.”
Although this time is unsettling and difficult for many, it’s important to continue to advocate for our representation in government and not allow such setbacks to affect our political autonomy. This can only happen through cooperation and accountability from both sides to ensure citizens receive a responsible government that serves the people.
